August 13, 2009 – Advanced Magnet Lab (AML) completed another successful test of a Superconducting Magnet, built using AML’s Double-Helix™ (DH) Magnet Technology. DH is a breakthrough discovery in electro-magnet design and packaging which among others includes: specialized software for CAD driven coil design, modeling & analysis, innovative methods for creating pure magnetic fields in a wide range of configurations with no systematic errors and manufacturing technology for reliable and automated production of high performance magnets.
The tests, performed at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida, demonstrated that coils produced using DH are able to successfully contain the very high Lorentz Forces generated on the superconducting wire resulting in reliable operation. These high forces are the result of the very high magnetic fields, of over 3 Tesla, and electrical currents, of over 4,000 Amperes, in the superconducting wire. In addition, measurements of the uniformity of the magnetic fields generated by the DH coil showed minimal undesired harmonics. The results of the test clearly differentiate AML’s Double-Helix™ magnet technology from other electro-magnet winding approaches such as saddle or racetrack coils.
AML is on track for commercial deployment of this proprietary magnet technology in a number of applications. For electrical machinery, such as high power generators in wind turbines, DH technology results in smaller, lighter and more reliable systems. For charged particle magnets, such as those found in advanced medical imaging and treatment equipment, DH technology delivers very powerful magnets in a smaller footprint and with exceptional purity of magnetic field. Other applications such as superconducting propulsion, magnetic launch, non-destructive inspection and magnetic filtration are also being considered.
Since 1995, the Advanced Magnet Lab has been providing revolutionary technology for the design and manufacture of advanced normal & superconducting magnets. AML’s core technologies are leveraged across a variety of markets to enable customer specific products and applications. These technologies are proven and differentiated with unmatched capability, performance, reliability, lead-time and cost competitiveness. These markets include medical, energy, research, space & defense.
